If you're evaluating environmental safety sensors for a school, security integration, or any facility that needs to monitor private spaces, you've probably noticed a problem: every sensor on the market claims to do the same thing. Vape detection, air quality, keyword alerts, occupancy. The spec sheets all start to look identical.

So how do you actually tell them apart?

We ran a webinar we called The Great Sensor Bake-Off to answer exactly that. The idea is simple: you don't judge a cake by the frosting. You cut into it. Below are the three tests we use to separate one environmental sensor from another: the signature (what everyone claims), the technical bake (what's underneath), and the showstopper (what nobody else can bring to the table), with Triton ULTRA as our worked example.

Use this as a buyer's checklist. Whatever sensor you're comparing, ask it these same questions.

Round 1: The Signature (What Every Sensor Should Do, and the Details That Matter)

These are the "table stakes" features. Almost every environmental sensor lists them. The differences show up in the details, so this is where you should ask the sharpest questions.

Vape and smoke detection, including synthetic THC

Nearly every sensor detects vape and smoke. Far fewer detect synthetic THC.

This matters more than it sounds. Traditional THC detection is calibrated for organic cannabis. But most THC found in vapes today is synthetic. Triton ULTRA is built to alert on synthetic THC, not just the organic profile, which closes a gap that older detection methods miss.

Keyword and distress detection

In an emergency, people say predictable things: "help me," "emergency," "police." Triton ULTRA is programmed to detect these natural keywords and signs of distress in a voice, so a genuine emergency triggers an alert, while everyday phrases like "help me with my homework" do not.

You can also customize keywords for your environment. In healthcare or retail, for example, internal codes like "code blue" or "code white" can be set to alert specific groups of staff based on what those codes mean inside your organization.

Noise thresholds and event recognition

A sensor shouldn't just measure loudness and guess. If it hears a spike in decibels and blindly reports "gunshot," you'll drown in false alarms.

Triton ULTRA analyzes the sound profile of an event rather than raw volume, so a slammed stall door or a dropped book doesn't get flagged as a critical incident. The result is fewer false alerts and more trustworthy notifications.

Air quality monitoring, tamper detection, and cloud notifications round out the baseline. Standard on paper, but again, the value is in how well each is implemented.

Round 2: The Technical Bake (The Three Questions That Actually Decide the Purchase)

This is the part that never makes it onto a glossy spec sheet, but it's what integrators, IT teams, and end users actually need answered before they buy. Three questions come up every time.

1. Is my data secure? (Look for SOC 2 Type 2.)

Triton ULTRA is backed by SOC 2 Type 2 certification. Here's why that phrasing matters:

  • SOC 2 is an independent audit of security controls against the Trust Services Criteria.
  • Type 2 means the controls weren't just designed correctly; they were tested and proven to operate effectively over time.

Triton's audit period ran from September 15 to December 15, 2025, conducted by an independent auditor, and returned an unqualified opinion with zero exceptions, meaning no vulnerabilities were identified during the audit period. (In audit language, "unqualified" is the best possible result.)

Not every environmental sensor on the market carries SOC 2 Type 2 certification, because it's a demanding, unglamorous process. That's exactly why it's worth asking about.

2. Will it work in my building? (Ask about daisy chaining and PoE.)

Triton ULTRA supports daisy chaining of up to 5 devices. Instead of running a separate cable back to the switch for every device, one "home run" cable feeds the first device, which then powers the next through its out-port, and so on, up to five units.

The payoff for retrofits:

  • Less cabling, less labor, fewer switch ports.
  • The chain can include other devices too. A nearby camera can be powered off the same run.
  • In the right layout, this can cut cabling and installation time significantly compared to running a dedicated cable to every device.

Each device draws a maximum of 5 watts, so a PoE++ port supplying ~30 watts comfortably powers a full chain. (Cat6 cabling and reasonable run lengths help keep the chain stable.)

3. Will it integrate with what I already own?

Nobody wants another dashboard to babysit. Triton ULTRA is designed for open integration. It works with existing camera systems, video management systems (VMS), and messaging platforms like Slack and Google Chat, so alerts show up inside the tools your team already uses.

This is a deliberate choice. Some environmental sensors are locked into a single manufacturer's ecosystem and integrate best (or only) with that vendor's cameras. Triton stays open across platforms, so you're not forced to switch between two systems or buy into one closed stack.

Round 3: The Showstopper (What Sets Triton ULTRA Apart)

This is the round where "does the same thing as everyone else" ends. These are capabilities that go beyond the standard sensor feature set.

Cell phone detection

As more states pass phone-free school laws, the burden of enforcing them falls on districts, often with tools like pouches or door caddies that a determined student can defeat with a burner phone.

Triton ULTRA takes a different approach: it detects the Bluetooth signal a phone emits, even when the phone is on airplane mode or has Bluetooth switched off, and can alert administrators that a phone is present in a monitored space like a restroom.

Importantly, it filters out non-phone Bluetooth devices (earbuds, medical devices, etc.) and collects no personally identifiable information. It reports that a phone is present, not whose phone it is.

People counting and the occupancy visualizer

Restrooms and locker rooms are exactly the private spaces you can't put a camera in, yet you still need to keep them safe. Triton ULTRA's occupancy visualizer uses radar to show how many people are in a space and how long they've been there, with no camera and no PII.

  • Occupants appear as green dots that turn yellow and then red the longer they remain.
  • Alerts are fully customizable: by number of people, by dwell time, or both.
  • You can upload your bell schedule so you're not alerted during the natural rush between classes, only during instructional time.
  • Coverage is rated for roughly a 15 ft × 15 ft area, tracking up to 13 people at once when unobstructed.

Evidence Room: pairing the sensor inside with the camera outside

Because you can't put a camera inside a restroom, incidents there are usually a black box. Evidence Room solves this by pairing the sensor inside the private space with the camera outside it, and time-stamping the two streams side by side.

The result is a complete, privacy-respecting timeline: a student enters (captured on the hallway camera), the sensor logs a vape event or tamper alarm inside, and you see the same student exit, all synced to the second. You know what happened inside a private space without ever surveilling it.

Triton ULTRA does not collect any personally identifiable information in the private spaces where it's installed. It reports that a phone or person is present, never whose. This is a core design principle for the sensitive areas it monitors.

How fast is detection-to-notification? Typically 3 to 5 seconds, depending on your cellular or network connection.

Can I turn individual features on or off? Yes. Features are fully à la carte, so you enable what you need and disable what you don't, per sensor.

Should the sensor be mounted on the ceiling or a wall? Ceiling mounting is recommended. A ceiling mount provides full 360° coverage, versus roughly 180° on a wall. For vape detection specifically, smoke rises and spreads across the ceiling, making a ceiling mount more reliable.

How many people can the occupancy visualizer track? Up to 13 people at once within a roughly 15 ft × 15 ft area, assuming the space is unobstructed.

Can the occupancy data be viewed inside my existing VMS? Yes. The occupancy visualization is available as an RTSP stream that can be mapped alongside the camera outside the space, directly within your VMS interface.

Does the sensor distinguish vaping from masking agents or cleaning products? Yes. Triton ULTRA identifies masking agents and aerosols separately from vape events, so you can choose whether to be alerted on them, without them masking a real detection.

How many devices can be daisy-chained together? Up to 5 devices per chain, reducing cabling, labor, and required switch ports.

The Bottom Line

Every sensor looks the same on a spec sheet. The differences show up when you cut into them:

  • Signature: Does it detect synthetic THC? Can it recognize distress and custom keywords? Does it analyze sound profiles, or just volume?
  • Technical: Is it SOC 2 Type 2 certified? Can it daisy-chain to simplify installation? Does it stay open across platforms, or lock you into one ecosystem?
  • Showstopper: Can it detect concealed phones, visualize occupancy without a camera, and pair sensor data with outside video, all without collecting PII?
